Q&A

As Founder of this fantastic App, what was your motivation to create such an App?
JD:
“With the rise of technology, kids these days spend a lot of time online, especially on smartphones. It is great that these children are becoming technology friendly, but they watch videos on YouTube or play games, most of which do not provide them mental growth. At times, the learning of the child suffers. Some games even expose these children to violence, etc. With the objective in mind that these children should spend their time learning while using a smartphone, we made this App.”

Why should Users download this App?
JD:
“The App has been made with children in mind and the interface has been kept extremely simple to use. The App allows you to not only learn ABC, numbers, fruit names, animal names and rhymes, but it has pronunciation for all these subjects.”

What are the advantages compared to other similar Apps?
JD:
“We have a bunch of advantages over other Apps – our App works offline, does not have ads, is free to use and consumes very less space. We also have a drawing pad feature where children can draw the objects of their choice, color them and then share it with others or save on their phones. The drawing pad feature sees the highest engagement within the App with an average user spending about 8 minutes on that page. The App is extremely light-weight and consumes just 6.5MB while other similar Apps are at least double the size. We plan to further reduce the size through some optimizations.”

Can you tell something about the process, challenges, hurdles and time spent from the moment you start (The Idea) till the moment you launched the App at the AppStore / Google Play?
JD:
“My brother Rishabh & I work as a team and we did not make this App to earn money from it. We have our full-time day jobs to earn ourselves bread and butter. Managing time from our day job and working late nights to build the App, it took us about 3 weeks to ship the first version. While building, we were not sure if we would find users for our idea as the play store had a lot of similar Apps, so we had to build something unique and different. We focused on keeping it simple and identified few differentiators such as offline working feature, light-weight feature. We even added an extra feature of the drawing/color pad within the App to increase the App engagement.”

Once you launched the App in the Appstore / Google Play, what did you do to promote this App to your target audience (user group)? Do you think Applepies (as worldwide rating and reviewing Online App Magazine) can have a certain role in this?
JD:
“I love to talk about this topic. We did not have an advertising budget so getting users for our App was probably not going to be easy, but we learned some ASO and applied this to our Apps. ASO is a wonderful way to earn organic installs for your App by ranking your App for high traffic keywords. The process involves researching high traffic and low competition keywords and then attempting to rank for these keywords. To rank, the keywords should be properly used in the App title, short description & long description.
Gradually, we started getting organic installs and in just 45 days of being launched, we are getting about 800-1000 installs/day. Our App has about 2.5k DAUs with overall daily App engagement of about 9 minutes per user. We achieved all of this organically without spending a penny on ads. You can see from the below screenshot that we have acquired most of our users from ‘Search’ and zero users from paid Ads.”
On the play store, we constantly spend time on doing A/B tests with different variations of icons, screenshots to see which variation performs best. Our belief is that organic growth is always better than paid growth so we constantly spend efforts on this area.”

You as a visionary person, what is your view on the new technologies of the digital smartphone (App) world. Do you think that within 1 to 5 years Apps will be indispensable? So Apps will replace manual activities like controlling our home appliances from your smartphone, talk to your doctor via an App, instead of cash payments pay by your smartphone.
JD:
“In my opinion, Apps are proving really useful in the digital age. Apps have already started replacing some manual activities such as controlling our home appliances and they will continue to add different dimensions on making human lives simpler. The education App market still needs a lot of attention and focus from developers especially for developing countries. I would urge developers to make Apps in the education category and if possible free. I believe that education is everyone’s basic right and it should be affordable enough for all.”

Are you currently (still) looking for investments or funds to finalize or optimize your App?
JD:
“Most of our growth is organic and we are doing the development ourselves, we are not looking for any investments at the moment.”

Wat is the business model of the App (how does the App earns money?) Think of advertisements, premium subscriptions in the App etc?
JD:
“The App is to help the users of the developing economy and we have kept the App free. Including ads would hinder the App experience, so we have decided to keep the App free from ads.”

Last but not least is there anything you want to recommend other creators/founders?
JD:
“Never be scared of failing. If you Ship Fast & Fail Fast, you definitely learn fast.”
