Q & A

As Founder of this fantastic App, what was your motivation to create such an App?
PH: “
I developed the dementia-App after my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer. I didn’t know anything about alzheimer or dementia. When I start looking for information I couldn’t find what I am looking for. That was when I decided to make our own dementia-App for my mother at home. Also because my brother and sister wanted to do more for her, to support her more, to be with her more. But due to our own life, childeren, work etc. we were not always be able to do so.”

Why should Users download this App?
PH: “
The dementia-App helps unburden people with dementia and their immediate environment. The contact that is made via this community-App has the advantage that it boosts social involvement and adds to the quality of life. A digital caregiver circle that consists of family, friends and social service-professionals guarantees support for people with dementia.

Now that people who suffer from dementia are expected to stay longer in their own homes, the need for a strict daily schedule has increased. This involves adequate support by both caregivers and technology.

The dementia-App is an important supplement to the support that social workers and the families of people with dementia can offer.

What are the advantages compared to other similar App’s?
PH: “The dementia-App has several functionalities within it. Therefore you only need one application instead of several. The app is also multi-platform all tablets and smartphones.

Functionalities

Screensaver
The dementia-App always starts in the screensaver mode. You can always see the day, time, and which activities will take place on that particular day.

Memory-games
The dementia-App contains a variety of games that stimulate the memory. The care recipient can play these games on their own, or during visits with others. This leads to social interaction that will increase the wellbeing of the users.

My day/week
Care recipients only have to touch the screen to see all the activities for that particular day or week. Past activities are removed from the list, to avoid confusion.

Contact
With this function the care recipient and the caregiver can communicate. They can talk and see each other at the same time as they go through the day. Visual contact in particular can contribute to the wellbeing of the care recipient as well as their caregivers. Recognition has a positive effect on the user. Caregivers or family-members can support their loved-ones from a distance and at the same time assess the overall situation and state of the care recipient.

Photo album
The photo album can plot the course of someone’s life by using precious photographs. It should be taken into account that the pictures contain a story or event that can awaken pleasant memories and lead to social interaction. Photos can be placed in the album from a distance as well as directly onto the care recipient’s tablet.

Logbook
Caregivers, family members, friends, case managers and extramural care can keep each other posted when it comes to the day-to-day experiences with the user. The connection with the care professionals that can be made within the logbook of the dementia-App (with the user’s consent) is an important aid for all parties involved. With this aid care professionals can acquire more in- depth information in order to optimize support. The connection will also make sure that care professionals can support other caregivers (volunteers or family) by answering questions and presenting solutions.

Agenda
Long-distance caregivers can put appointments and reminders in the memo-book. If necessary it can be confirmed whether or not the user has seen the entry. The appointments and reminders can be filled in monthly, weekly or yearly. To give them an extra accent, pictures can be added to the appointments.

Information kiosk
In cooperation with the Alzheimer’s Societies, Universities, the National government and many other agencies, the dementia-App collects important information concerning dementia and caregivers in the dementia-App kiosk.

In several digital magazines, we provide helpful information on the latest dementia research, on care giving, home care and outpatients treatment, on financial and legal affairs, culture and entertainment, domotics and many other relevant issues that you’ll want to get access to as soon as possible.

British Pathé 1945 – 1976
British Pathé was once a dominant feature of the world wide British cinema experience. The voice that was synonymous with Pathé belonged to Bob Danvers-Walker.

In cooperation with the British media archives we have put together a world wide collection of themes in de dementia-App like royalty, football, events, entertainment and news. By using their own British Pathé channel, users and caregivers can experience pleasant memories that strike a cord.”

Can you tell something about the process, challenges, hurdles and time spent from the moment you start (The Idea) till the moment you launched the App at the AppStore / GooglePlay?
PH:
“When will developped the dementia-App it was just to help our mother. We wanted to place it in the app stores and go on with our own jobs. But it didn’t go that way due to the change in the government system (in the Netherlands). The town itself, instead of the province, had to take care of there inhabitants with dementia and they didn’t know how to do that. Our hometown, Muiden, heard about our dementia-App and asked us if we were able to help them. The town bought our dementia-App for all there inhabitants with dementia and connected caregivers. Since then more than 30 towns in The Netherlands starts a pilot with the dementia-App and still there are more to come. Also a few other countries are interested such as Mexico, Indonesia, Japan and Finland.”

Once you launched the App in the Appstore / GooglePlay, what did you do to promote this App to your target audience (user group)? Do you think Applepies (as worldwide rating and reviewing Online App Magazine) can have a certain role in this?
PH:
“The dementia-App is a social company. There was not, and still isn’t, enough money available too the start B2C marketing. So we only do B2B by sending emails to the town office to offer a pilot project with the dementia-App. During our first year already more than 30 towns started a pilot with the dementia-App. Ofcause we also use the social media a lot to promote de dementia-App and that works. We will start this year a social media “growht hacking”campagn because we will grow to 100.ooo users in the Netherlands.

We absolutely think that Applepies can have a certain role. Already by giving us the opportunity to introduce ourself to all your followers/ subscribers will help us to promote the dementia-App. People need to know about the existence of the dementia-App.”

You as a visionair, what is your view on the new technologies of the digital smartphone (App) world. Do you think that within 1 to 5 years App’s will be indispensable?
PH:
“Yes, we think that this is just the start. We think that app’s will be connected tot sensors and domotica, to data for research etc. This is just the start.”

Last but not least is there anything you want to recommend other creators/founders?
PH: “Just go for it and start NOW!!!”
